FAQ

Q: So this is a height list of the toys?

A: No. It's a height index of the characters in the cartoon. As a child, I watched every episode of the cartoon series, and while aware of the comics series, wasn't as interested in them. Shame, really considering some of the developments in the comics (but I won't go into that).

Q: EVERY character?

A: No. No humans. No tertiary characters other than humans. If it was a robot, I'm interested. If it was a Transformer, I am VERY interested. If you notice a character from the AMERICAN cartoon series I've left off, please tell me, and I will correct it in the next release.

Q: What about the Headmasters and Targetmasters? They transformed!

A: Only their suits transformed. So I listed the suits.

Q: What possessed you to do this?

A: Well, I write fanfics occasionally, and I felt that it would be a good resource for other fanfic writers. They usually have the common sense not to pair up Bumblebee and Devastator, for instance, but what about if you want a story involving Octane and Broadside (two "late release" triple changers). Because of this index, you now know that Broadside is quite a bit taller than Octane, so if your story involved Octane beating the pants off of Broadside, it would most likely have to be through cunning rather than brute force. Also, mainly, I wanted to be able to have a good reference for the gestalt combiner teams, because size, in Transformers, often translates to strength. With this, a fanfic writer would be able to tell that Superion and Menasor could stand toe to toe, but (for whatever reason) if Devastator and Predaking went up against each other, Devastator would have a tricky time of it.

Q: Wow. I don't even REMEMBER some of these guys!

A: Neither did I until I looked around the internet. Some of the characters weren't even named in the show . . .

Q: Waitaminit! Shouldn't "X" be "Y" tall?

A: This is actually the only frequently asked question I get. To answer: Perhaps. The problem is, I have very few episodes of the original cartoon series for my own personal reference, (but there are many websites with screen shots, some I don't even remember when I see them). If you have proof that a certain character is listed at the wrong height (like a screen shot with that character next to another character), e-mail me, at afbourque@aol.com, either a picture of the image (in JPEG, please) or a pointer to a web page with the screen shot. Also, I've been tinkering with a "height range" system, but have not been able to implement it yet. Next release, next release!

Q: "Feet"? "Inches"? Where's the metric system?

A: In the previous release of this list, I used both SI (International System, or Metric) AND English Standard. However, while revamping for this release, I took metric out. It will be in the next release.

Q: Hey, you've got Broadside listed twice. Why's that?

A: I've been informed that there were TWO Broadsides, sort of. There were definitely two models for his head, and there are also two TOTALLY different representations of his height. In one particular episode ("Carnage in C Major") he was as a bit taller than a "regular" Autobot, but in other episodes ("Grimlock's New Brain" and "The Burden Hardest to Bear," for instance) he's considerably taller. I've decided that the two models represent two different bodies for Broadside, and somewhere along the way, for whatever reason, he switched them. Silly Broadside.

Q: Nice list. Okay. So, who's taller, Fortress Maximus or Metroplex? Trypticon or Scorponok?

A: Personally, I think that Metroplex and Trypticon are shorter. However, there are lots of people who disagree with me (there are those that agree, too). So I decided they are the same height. That should shut everyone up (he says hopefully). For the purposes of trying to establish a standardization of scale I've decided that Metroplex is not Autobot City (he would have to be MILES in height if he were, since Trypticon was created from a human town and New York would have difficulties rivaling Autobot City: Transformers--and hence, Autobots-- are larger than humans, often substantially, and an Autobot City would have to be bigger than a human city; and Trypticon is the size of Metroplex.

Q: But there's an episode where they show Metroplex taller than the Eiffel Tower! Isn't that thing, like, 800 feet tall? How do you reconcile the difference?

A: To answer the first question, yes. To answer the second: well, that's sort of the problem. Firstly, there's that height range thing I mentioned earlier. I just have to put it in here some day.*I* say Fortress Maximus, as portrayed in the American Cartoon, is actually Fortress (From the Japenese Headmasters series), so Cerebros is the head of Fortress, and Fortress, aside from being an ancient Nebulan city (at least as big as New York, probably bigger) and battle station, is also the head of Fortress Maximus, which is soon found sometime after "The Rebirth." I suppose this means that Scorponok is not just an irregular spaceship/scorpion and ancient Hive city, but also the head of Megazarak (or Black Zarak, whatever . . .) Freaky, isn't it? But the Sunbow animators (for the Generation 1 cartoon) did not use any kind of standard scale. Transformers would change height from episode to episode. I'm not sure, but I wouldn't be surprised if, sometimes, heights changed form SCENE TO SCENE within the same episode!

And, to my horror, it seems that the Mainframe CGI animators for Beast Wars waffled heights some, too. Nowhere NEAR as bad as the Gen 1 animators, but it IS a bit frustrating. They seem to carry a little of it over into Beast Machines, too. Ah well. I knew this job was tough when I took it.
